The U.S. Army is demonstrating technology at a training ground in Missouri, using an “Autonomous Tunnel Exploration (ATE) Robot” jointly developed by Korean and American defense research institutes for surveillance in the underground tunnels of a simulated enemy nation. In December 2021, a demonstration was held at a training ground in Missouri, USA, where a robot was deployed into a simulated enemy’s underground tunnel for search and surveillance. The robot is known to use artificial intelligence (AI) to locate weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) autonomously.

After the demonstration, the U.S. Army said, “The Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC) under the Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) held a technology demonstration of the Autonomous Tunnel Exploration (ATE) robot to use in sub-terrain, such as cities’ underground facilities like tunnels, at the Rolla training ground in Missouri. The ATE robot can identify its location where GPS signals are unavailable and explore tunnels, creating 2D or 3D maps of their structure.”

Furthermore, it became a hot topic when they released photos of U.S. military personnel entering underground tunnels with autonomous robots on tracks or four-legged walking robots for internal search and surveillance. The simulated enemy nation is interpreted to be North Korea, believed to hide nuclear and biochemical weapons and command facilities in underground tunnels.
