An artificial intelligence (AI) interpreting system, which allows foreign tourists and subway station staff to converse in their respective native languages through a transparent screen, will be expanded to 11 subway stations in Seoul.

The Seoul Metro announced on the 14th that they will expand the operation of the “Foreign Language Conversation Simultaneous Interpretation System” to 11 stations, including Myeongdong Station, Hongik University Station, and Gimpo Airport Station, which are places that foreigners often visit.

This system uses a transparent organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display, allowing foreigners and station staff to converse in their native languages. After speaking, the translation is automatically displayed in written text across the screen. The languages available for simultaneous conversation are Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Malay, Indonesian, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, and Russian, totaling 13 languages.

In addition to simultaneous conversation interpretation, the system offers services such as route search based on subway maps, transfer and travel time information, fare guidance, and manned luggage storage (T-Luggage), which can also be used in 13 languages.

The system is offered at 11 locations, including △Line 1 Jongno 5-ga Station △, Line 2 City Hall Station, Hongik University Station, Euljiro Entrance Station, Gangnam Station △, Line 3 Gyeongbok-gung Station △, Line 4 Myeongdong Station △, Line 5 Gwanghwa-mun Station, Gimpo Airport Station △, Line 6 Itaewon Station, and Gongdeok Station.

The corporation’s president, Baek Ho, said, “We plan to actively engage AI technology and provide various additional services on top of the simultaneous conversation interpretation service, enhancing the convenience and utility of our services.”
