The man is accused of pretending to be a wealthy foreigner on social media from April to December 2022, approaching female victims, forming so-called “sexual relationships” or “romantic relationships,” and then distributing intimate photos received from the victims on the internet or extorting goods worth hundreds of thousands of won.

The police also arrested seven additional suspects involved in purchasing and reselling the footage distributed by the accused. One individual who played a significant role in the distribution network was arrested.

The accused was unemployed and in a near-destitute economic state. Contrary to his online persona of being wealthy, he was found to be living in a house full of garbage.

He created several impersonating accounts, including the lead character Nick Young from the foreign movie about the life of a wealthy family, Crazy Rich Asians, to target women.

He also gathered information about the wealthy through internet searches and collected photos of luxury goods such as expensive foreign cars.

In addition, he meticulously planned his crimes by creating and using separate accounts pretending to be agencies that introduce wealthy people and perform dual roles.

A police official said, “We are committed to tracking down illegal filming and distribution activities,” and added, “We will do our best to eradicate cyber crimes that threaten the lives of citizens, such as digital sexual crimes and cyber fraud.”
