On the 16th, it was unveiled that Kim Jong Un had been using the ‘Aurus,’ a high-end car received as a gift from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Importing luxury cars into North Korea is a violation of the UN Security Council(UNSC) sanctions against North Korea, but this has been interpreted as a display of the recently closed ‘North Korea-Russia relations.

KCTV broadcast that afternoon, showing Chairman Kim traveling to the event in the Aurus and highlighting his visit to the Kangdong Greenhouse Complex near Pyongyang the previous day.

Earlier in the morning, Kim Yo Jong, Deputy Director of the Workers’ Party, stated in a speech released through the Korean Central News Agency, “We are very pleased that our supreme leader is using the special car that the Russian head of state has gifted.”

She added, “The car’s special features are perfect and can be trusted completely,” emphasizing that the use of this car “clearly demonstrates the friendship between North Korea and Russia, which is being enhanced and developed at a new higher level.”

She also added, “We send our sincere thanks to Moscow once again.”

Meanwhile, President Putin gifted the ‘Aurus’, known as the ‘Russian version of Rolls-Royce’, to Chairman Kim on the 18th of last month.

The gift of a car violates the UN Security Council’s sanctions against North Korea. Not only does it fall under the category of luxury goods whose transfer to North Korea is prohibited, but the direct or indirect supply, sale, or transfer of vehicles to North Korea has also been banned since UN Security Council Resolution 2397 was adopted in December 2017.
