Tourist Paradise Turns Crime Scene: Korean Robbers Shot in the Philippines

Cebu Daily News

A shocking incident occurred in Cebu, a popular tourist and resort city among Koreans in the Philippines, where a Korean robber was killed. While there have been occasional incidents of Koreans being shot and killed by locals, it’s exceedingly rare for a Korean national to be killed in a confrontation with police after perpetrating a robbery against another Korean. The circumstances suggest that both the assailants and the victim were Korean nationals; further verification is necessary.

According to reports from local media outlets like the Manila Bulletin and the Cebu Daily News on the 3rd (local time), three Korean men in their 40s broke into the residence of the victim located in a luxury villa complex in Cebu’s Banilad City, the day before.

They threatened the victim with a handgun and stole 200,000 pesos (approximately $3,800) in cash, wristwatches, and jewelry worth 25 million pesos (approximately $475,000).

A local who witnessed the armed men entering the victim’s home reported it to the police, who promptly responded to the scene.

Despite the authorities’ entreaties for the perpetrators to surrender peacefully, they ended up opening fire on the police instead, leading to a shootout.

Tragically, one of the assailants, identified as Mr. Choi, was killed during the exchanges of gunfire, and the remaining two accomplices were arrested. It was reported that a police officer was also injured and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

The Philippine police announced that they’re planning to charge the suspects with robbery and attempted murder, given their reluctance to provide statements.

Meanwhile, the Korean consulate is working to ascertain the exact circumstances of the incident from local police and other sources.
