On the 26th, Lee Jae Myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced, “I will put everything aside and meet with President Yoon Suk Yul first.” The summit meeting between Yoon and Lee stalled due to differences in agenda alignment, but it is now on a steep rise.
At the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the same day, Leader Lee said, “Even though it’s been a while since the two leaders have met, it’s important to organize the agenda and coordinate beforehand, but even that doesn’t seem to be easy.”
The presidential office and the Democratic Party of Korea held two working-level meetings for the first meeting between President Yoon and Leader Lee. Still, they ended without any progress, only confirming their different positions. The presidential office requests a free-form meeting without needing pre-agenda coordination. Still, the Democratic Party of Korea is demanding issues such as 250,000 won (approx. $181) per person in the people’s livelihood support fund and acceptance of the special prosecution law for Corporal Chae, which has deepened the conflict.
Lee said, “There are various discussions regarding the summit meeting,” and lamented, “It would have been good if the complex issues were organized in advance, but it seems not easy.”
He emphasized, “I don’t want to waste time organizing issues, so I will quickly set up a meeting schedule,” and “I will meet with President Yoon and honestly deliver the sentiment of our people revealed in the general election.”
Lee asked President Yoon, “Please understand the difficult situation of our people,” and requested, “I earnestly request that you listen carefully to the voices of the people reflected in the general election results and join me in brainstorming solutions to overcome this crisis.”
He also stated, “With the determination that failure to overcome this crisis will lead to collapse, I will strive to produce the results and possible measures that the people expect in this meeting.”
Leader Lee has made a bold decision regarding the summit meeting, so it is expected that the working-level negotiations between the two sides will also gain momentum. The third meeting is scheduled between Hong Chul Ho, senior presidential secretary for political affairs in charge of the summit meeting, and Cheon Jun Ho, chief secretary of the Democratic Party of Korea.
A party official met with reporters at the National Assembly and said, “Chief secretary Cheon called senior presidential secretary Hong and conveyed Leader Lee’s willingness to actively accept the meeting with the president and proposed to have the third working-level meeting this morning.” He also said, “As the presidential office accepts, the third working-level preparation meeting will be held this morning.” The results of the meeting are planned to be announced at 2 PM.
The official emphasized, “Although the presidential office lacked sincere opinions on our proposed agenda, Leader Lee has decided to meet with the president.”
