An accident occurred on a highway in China when an electric vehicle collided with a truck ahead, resulting in the death of all three passengers. Allegations have surfaced that the vehicle’s doors did not open, and the airbags did not deploy during this incident.

According to the Chinese newspaper Fengpai and Reuters, on the afternoon of the 26th, an AiTO M7 Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) collided with a truck while traveling at a speed of 115 km/h (approximately 71 mph) on a highway near Yuncheng city in Shanxi province. Immediately after the accident, the vehicle exploded into flames. Nearby drivers gathered to try to rescue the passengers by breaking the vehicle’s windows, but unfortunately, two men and a two-year-old baby lost their lives.

A female relative of the victims claimed, “The AiTO M7, which my younger brother was driving, collided with a water truck on the highway.” She added, “My husband and our two-year-old son, who were in the backseat, along with my brother, all died.” She raised suspicions about vehicle defects, stating that the car doors did not open and the airbags did not deploy. She also mentioned that the vehicle involved in the accident was the latest model purchased by her brother three months ago.

However, the vehicle manufacturer denied these allegations, expressing condolences to the victims through its Weibo account, a Chinese social networking service (SNS). The manufacturer stated, “The airbags and power battery worked normally.” Local police have begun investigating the accident, including potential vehicle defects.

The AiTO M7 is a luxury SUV model produced in collaboration with Chinese electric vehicle company Seres and Huawei starting in 2022. Huawei has provided technology and marketing support.
