A tragic death occurred at a high school in Pohang.

According to The Fact, the North Gyeongsang Fire Department announced on the 9th that a 17-year-old student suddenly collapsed while watching a school performance at a high school in Woohyeon-dong, Pohang North District, at around 11:13 a.m. the previous day.

It is reported that the student suddenly lost consciousness and fell while watching a school performance and following a group dance. The student was later taken to the hospital in cardiac arrest, but sadly, she did not make it.

The police are investigating the exact circumstances of the student’s death.

Cardiac arrest refers to a life-threatening condition in which the heart’s function of supplying blood to the entire body suddenly stops. In Korea, over 30,000 people fall due to cardiac arrest each year. According to a survey released by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency last year, the number of cardiac arrest patients witnessed by the general public, not rescuers or medical personnel, is close to 30,000 in a year.

Among them, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) happened in only 28.8%, and in cases where CPR was not performed, only 5.3% survived.

According to the 2021 Acute Cardiac Arrest Survey, out of 33,235 patients who suffered acute cardiac arrest outside of a hospital, 29,076 were witnessed by non-medical personnel, and only 8,381 of these cases could have CPR.

In cases where CPR was performed by a non-medical person, 11.6% survived, but only 5.3% survived when it was not performed.
