It has been reported that the North Korean military is currently carrying out construction work within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), including erecting walls and reinforcing wire fences connecting North Korean guard posts (GP).

According to military sources on the 15th, the North Korean military has recently been proceeding with operations such as building walls, digging the ground, and constructing roads between the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) within the DMZ and the Northern Limit Line (1.2 miles north of the military demarcation line) in some areas. Although further analysis is needed to determine whether these activities are for constructing border and defense facilities at some points, it has been reported that the North Korean military is currently reinforcing GP wire fences.

On the 9th, dozens of North Korean soldiers crossed the MDL and retreated after the South Korean military’s warning shots. At that time, the North Korean military temporarily violated the MDL while working with picks and shovels.

Kim Jong Un declared the relationship between North Korea and South Korea as a state of war at the end of last year. Since then, North Korea has been severing physical connections with South Korea by laying mines on all three roads, including the Gyeongui Line, Donghae Line, and Hwasalmeori Tactical Road, which connect inter-Korea.

There are also suggestions that North Korea may install a long wall along the armistice line.

A South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff official said, “Our military is closely monitoring the activities of the North Korean military,” and “We are maintaining a solid readiness posture and closely cooperating with the UN Command, which governs the DMZ.”
