China’s Show of Force: 66 Military Aircraft Spotted Near Taiwan

Daniel Kim Views

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense detected 66 Chinese military aircraft and 7 naval vessels in the Taiwan Strait on Thursday. Of the 66 aircraft, 56 crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, and 39 were detected passing south of Taiwan.

This detection of 66 military aircraft represents the largest incursion this year. The previous record was set at 62 aircraft in May, during the inauguration of Taiwan’s President Lai Ching Te, when the Chinese military conducted exercises around Taiwan.

On July 4, Russia’s state-owned TASS news agency reported that Russia’s Pacific Fleet had begun maritime patrols with China. The Chinese military deployed the Shandong carrier group, which includes the second aircraft carrier Shandong, the combat ship Yenan, and the destroyer Guiren. Last Friday, the joint Chinese-Russian fleet entered the Western Pacific through the Osumi Strait in the East China Sea. This marks the first deployment of a Chinese carrier group outside the South China Sea this year.
