North Korean leader Kim Jong Un mentioned military cooperation with Russia during his meeting with the Russian deputy Defense Minister.

The Korean Central News Agency reported today that Kim met with Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexey Krivoruchko, who is visiting North Korea with a military delegation. The meeting took place yesterday at Government Complex No. 1 in Pyongyang. During their discussion, they acknowledged the importance and necessity of bilateral military cooperation to safeguard their mutual security interests.

According to the news agency, Kim sent a combative greeting to the Russian military and people, who he said are engaged in a just war to protect the sovereign rights and security of their state. He expressed the unwavering support and ironclad solidarity of both the government and the people of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea for Russia’s special military operations in Ukraine.

This is the first time Kim has directly mentioned military cooperation with Russia and the first time such a statement has been reported.

Kim emphasized that military cooperation should enhance the North Korea-Russia relationship and also contribute to establishing a regional and global order that both countries support. He highlighted the importance of revisiting the significance of last June’s Pyongyang-Russia-North Korea summit. Kim stated that the armies of the two nations, which share a long historical tradition and a combative friendship, should play a crucial role in leading a new era of North Korea-Russia relations. He urged that they stand more firmly united in defending regional and global peace and upholding international justice.

North Korea has been solidifying military cooperation by sending an army education delegation led by Kim Geum Chol, president of the Kim Il Sung Military University, to Moscow on the 8th.

This is the first official visit to a partner country related to military cooperation since the two countries signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement last month.
