North Korea’s Flood Rebuild: Rapid Progress or Just a Show?

Rodong Sinmun

On Thursday, Rodong Sinmun reported significant strides in North Korea’s recovery efforts in Chagang Province. According to the newspaper, Workers’ Party members mobilized for the reconstruction have advanced to structural work after a three-day attempt that included foundation excavation and concrete pouring for thousands of homes.

The report highlighted that the “assault team members from the Pyongyang City Party have completed a massive foundation excavation of over 2 ha in just 12 hours and finished pouring 6 ha of foundation concrete in 2 days, then focused on structural construction.”

Similarly, party members from Gangwon, Hwanghae Namdo, and South Hamgyong provinces reportedly completed their foundation and concrete tasks quickly. At the same time, the Nampo City Party achieved notable results in their foundation work.

However, these reports contrast other accounts suggesting that recovery efforts in the Amnok River region are lagging. Sources indicate that Chagang Province has yet to fully recover from landslides that damaged communication infrastructure, telephone poles, railways, and roads a month after the flooding.

Insiders from North Korea reported that the Chagang Province region still has not fully recovered from landslides that damaged communication lines, telephone poles, railways, and roads, even a month after the flood.

They mentioned that the general recovery work relies on manual labor due to a lack of heavy equipment.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service announced on Tuesday that it is closely monitoring as there is a trend in North Korea of executing several officials in response to the flooding that struck North Pyongan Province and Chagang Province at the end of July.
