South Korea’s military recently removed more than 1,300 Chinese-made closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras that had been mistakenly installed under the assumption that they were domestically produced.
According to military officials on Friday, during a joint inspection with intelligence agencies at the end of July, it was discovered that the CCTV cameras supplied to the South Korean military were not domestic-made but of Chinese origin.
As a result, the South Korean military has since removed all the problematic CCTV cameras and is in the process of replacing them with domestically produced models. Currently, over 100 new Korean-made CCTV cameras have been installed.
A South Korean military official stated, “It was determined that the problematic CCTV cameras were potentially designed to transmit footage to a specific server in China, which could have led to data leaks. However, no actual information has been leaked.”
The supplier is reported to have falsely claimed that these Chinese-made surveillance cameras were made in Korea when sold—the South Korean military plans to seek damages from the supplier.
