Japanese Child Stabbed on Way to School Again in China

Yonhap News

A tragic incident has claimed the life of a young Japanese elementary school student in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. On Wednesday morning, the student was attacked while heading to school and later transported to the hospital but sadly passed away early the next day.

In response to the incident, the Japanese embassy in China expressed deep sorrow and condolences through social media, underscoring the gravity of the situation. The embassy urged the Chinese government to conduct a thorough investigation and take measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

On the day of the incident, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, announced that “the suspect was apprehended at the scene, and further investigations are underway.” He also emphasized, “China will continue to take effective measures to ensure the safety of all foreigners within our borders.”

The Japanese government acted swiftly, summoning Wu Jianghao, the Chinese ambassador to Japan, to voice serious concerns over the safety of Japanese citizens in China.

This incident follows a previous attack in June in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, where a Japanese mother and child were assaulted, raising alarms about the safety of Japanese nationals in China. In that incident, the mother and child sustained injuries, and a Chinese female guide who tried to protect them lost her life.

The series of crimes targeting Japanese nationals raises the possibility of bilateral diplomatic tensions. Experts emphasize the need for a swift and thorough response from the Chinese government.

As anxiety grows among Japanese residents in China, there is an urgent call for the Chinese government to implement effective safety measures. In light of this troubling pattern, it seems both governments will be compelled to collaborate to protect their citizens abroad.
