Rocket Debris Crashes Near Chinese Village, Evacuations Issued

Daniel Kim Views

Rocket debris has once again fallen near a village close to a rocket launch site in China.

Authorities issued evacuation orders in advance and reported no casualties. However, some villagers expressed concern after hearing that the debris had fallen in an area where residents cultivate crops.

According to local media, including Jiupai News, on Friday, a cylindrical object suspected to be debris from a space launch vehicle fell into a cornfield in Tianlin County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China.

Photos taken by villagers and shared on social media show a broken silver cylindrical object lying in the fields, with flames and smoke billowing nearby. Villagers told local media that although the sparks did not lead to a fire, the farmland where the object fell was damaged, and they heard a loud boom as it hit the ground.

The object was debris from a rocket launched that day from a nearby site. A Tianlin County official told local reporters, “There were no casualties. Our staff informed residents of the situation in advance, but the villagers didn’t seem to pay much attention.” However, after the news spread, netizens pointed out the frequent occurrence of such incidents.

Similar incidents have occurred multiple times in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region near the launch site. In December last year, debris from a rocket booster fell in Baise City, Guangxi. A long cylindrical fragment crashed onto a road near residential areas, emitting thick smoke. Additionally, another incident occurred in May of this year where toxic red smoke rose, restricting access to the area.
