North Korea’s 23rd Balloon Launch of the Year Sparks Warnings

Daniel Kim Views

Yonhap News / North Korea launched a balloon that landed near Changchon-ri in Namsan-myeon, Chuncheon City.

North Korea has launched yet another trash-filled balloon targeting South Korea just ten days after the previous incident.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that the latest balloon, believed to be carrying debris aimed at South Korea, is drifting toward northern Gyeonggi Province and the greater Seoul area, pushed by prevailing winds. The JCS urged residents to stay alert for falling debris and to report any findings to military authorities or local police, advising against direct contact.

It’s been ten days since the last balloon release on September 22, bringing the total number of incidents this year to 23. In response, both Seoul and Gyeonggi Province issued emergency safety alerts. At 8:33 a.m., Seoul City’s message read, “North Korean trash balloons are landing in Seoul. Citizens should avoid falling debris and report any sightings to the military or police.”

Following the incident on September 23, the JCS had previously warned that if these balloon provocations escalated into a severe threat to public safety or crossed a critical line, South Korea’s military would take swift and decisive action.
