Lee Soon Sil, a North Korean defector, will appear on KBS2’s Boss Ears Are Donkey Ears to reveal the recipe for “Baesok Kimchi,” a dish once exclusively enjoyed by North Korea’s Kim family.

In the episode airing this Sunday, Lee introduces the Baesok Kimchi recipe, describing it as “the kimchi former U.S. President Donald Trump tasted during the North Korea-U.S. summit.” The dish, native to Pyongan Province in North Korea, is a regional specialty traditionally served to honored guests.

Lee explained that Kim Jong Il, Kim Jong Un, and senior party officials exclusively ate Baesok Kimchi. Ordinary people in North Korea could never even see it,” emphasizing its exclusivity.

Baesok Kimchi is notable for its luxurious ingredients. According to Lee, the filling is as vibrant as the five colors of the Obangsaek (traditional Korean color spectrum). It features fermented pollock, squid, oysters, shrimp, and sweet persimmons, creating a visually stunning dish. Even TV host Jun Hyun Moo praised its appearance, saying, “It’s so beautiful.” The dish is finished with omija (magnolia berry) water, adding a sweet, tangy flavor that reportedly leaves an unforgettable impression.

In the same episode, a culinary showdown unfolds between Lee Soon Sil’s Baesok Kimchi and Kim Hyo Sook’s Sweet Persimmon Kimchi, flavored with ripe persimmons. The competition, described as reminiscent of an all-star match, has guests marveling at the unique tastes. Lee expresses her confidence, saying, “I want to show the pride of Pyongyang. ” The guests praise the kimchi, calling it “a flavor they had never experienced.”

Even Kim Hyo Sook, an expert in traditional kimchi-making, complimented Lee’s Baesok Kimchi, calling it “deliciously mild.” The broadcast has heightened anticipation for viewers curious about the taste of Lee’s unique creation.

The program promises to reveal which kimchi won the guests’ favor in this culinary North-South competition. The winner will be announced this Sunday in the Boss Ears Are Donkey Ears episode.

Meanwhile, KBS2’s Boss Ears Are Donkey Ears airs every Sunday at 4:40 p.m. (KST).
