North Korea has characterized South Korea as a “politically paralyzed chaos” in the wake of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment vote.

On Friday, North Korea’s state-run newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported on the passage of Yoon’s impeachment motion last month and the subsequent impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck Soo, who had briefly served as acting president.

The newspaper stated, “Following the unprecedented large-scale insurrection that shook South Korea, the country has witnessed an escalation of activities by Yoon’s supporters and remnants of the insurgency, alongside intensifying partisan conflicts and power struggles.”

It further reported that the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) had requested Yoon’s arrest for failing to comply with investigation demands. After obtaining an arrest warrant from the court, they announced plans to execute it by January 6.

The article added, “For the first time in South Korea’s constitutional history, impeachment motions against the president and acting president have passed in succession, with further impeachments of acting presidents anticipated. South Korea is in politically paralyzed chaos after Yoon’s impeachment vote.”

The report also noted the continuation of large-scale candlelight vigils, protests, and citizen marches in Seoul since the new year. It cited foreign media reports stating, “Yoon declared martial law, and just two weeks after his impeachment, the acting president was impeached. The leadership vacuum in South Korea has exacerbated political and economic uncertainty.”
