North Korea has announced the successful test launch of a new hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile, according to state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The test, conducted on Monday at a launch site near Pyongyang, was reportedly observed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his daughter Kim Ju Ae via a video surveillance system.

KCNA claims the missile achieved speeds of Mach 12 and struck its target after covering a distance of 1,500 kilometers (932 miles). The missile’s flight path reportedly reached two peak altitudes: 99.8 kilometers (62 miles) and 42.5 kilometers (26.4 miles).

The new missile reportedly incorporates carbon fiber composite materials and advanced flight and guidance control systems. Kim emphasized that this test aims to bolster North Korea’s defensive capabilities against “hostile forces” and stressed the importance of continually strengthening the country’s national defense.

Kim touted the development as a strategic deterrent, claiming it enhances North Korea’s nuclear deterrence capabilities. He asserted that the weapon system could overcome any existing missile defense systems, particularly those of adversaries in the Pacific region. This statement suggests North Korea may have developed missile capabilities capable of reaching Guam.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) provided an initial assessment. The missile, equipped with a medium-range engine, traveled approximately 1,100 kilometers (684 miles) before landing in the Yellow Sea. This test, which occurred just before the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, is significant.

Kim insisted that the missile test was defensive and claimed it did not negatively impact neighboring countries. This statement appears to be an attempt to frame the missile test as a measure to strengthen North Korea’s defensive capabilities rather than as an act of aggression.
