A man was attacked by an elephant during a religious festival in southern India, with the elephant reportedly grabbing the man’s leg with its trunk, violently shaking him, and tossing him aside.

According to the Times of India, the incident occurred on the morning of the same day at a religious festival in Tirur, a town in the Malappuram district, located about 350 kilometers (217 miles) north of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala state.

A police official explained, “On the final day of the four-day annual festival, an elephant suddenly charged into the crowd at the festival site this morning.” The official continued, “The elephant grabbed a man’s leg with its trunk, violently shook him, and then threw him into the crowd.”

The official also mentioned that the panicked crowd, attempting to flee, caused a stampede-like situation, leading to more than 20 injuries. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, with two people reported to be in critical condition.

Hundreds of people, including women and children, were at the scene. Local authorities took approximately two hours to subdue the rampaging elephant.

Local TV stations aired footage of festival-goers taking photos of four elephants adorned with gold decorations when one of the elephants suddenly became agitated and began causing chaos.
