Chinese actor Wang Xing, who went missing in Thailand, has been found in Myanmar three days later. Authorities suspect an online criminal syndicate abducted him.
Wang, who had recently been cast in a Thai film, lost contact with his team on Friday while in the border region between Thailand and Myanmar. His disappearance became public when his girlfriend urgently appealed for help on social media on Sunday evening.
According to the Bangkok Post, Wang, who was last seen near the border on Saturday, was located by Myanmar authorities the following day and returned to Thailand soon after. Photos released by Thai police showed him with a shaved head, a detail that shocked many and raised questions about the nature of his abduction.
Investigations revealed that Wang was lured to Thailand by a Chinese individual who contacted him through social media, falsely claiming to run a major entertainment company in the country. This convinced Wang to travel to Thailand for filming. Upon reaching the Thailand-Myanmar border, Wang was reportedly forced onto a boat and crossed into Myanmar. Realizing he was being taken against his will, Wang reportedly felt powerless to resist.
Thai police have stated that no Thai nationals were involved in the case, suggesting that individuals from China may have orchestrated the operation.
This case is part of a troubling increase in reports of individuals being deceived and trafficked into crime syndicates operating in Myanmar. Thai officials are concerned that such incidents could harm Thailand’s reputation and negatively affect the tourism industry, a vital sector of the country’s economy.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra emphasized the importance of addressing the situation carefully, saying, “We must handle this matter delicately to prevent any adverse effects on Thai tourism.”
In 2023, Thailand welcomed 35.5 million international tourists, with Chinese visitors making up the largest group at 6.7 million.
