Additional hiring amid mass layoffs in the global gaming industry

Jam City, the United States subsidiary of Netmarble, is on a hiring spree in the U.S. and Uruguay despite the storm of massive layoffs sweeping the global gaming industry. The company’s expansion of its workforce is drawing attention.

According to industry sources, on the 29th, Jam City is hiring a senior software engineer in the U.S. and a 2D animation lead manager and game designer in Uruguay.

The senior software engineer position is open to residents of Montreal or California. Jam City has stated that, upon joining the company, the hired engineer will develop casual mobile games based on the Disney franchise.

Jam City is also hiring a 2D animation lead manager and a game designer to work in its office located in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay.

The 2D animation lead manager will lead an animator team based in Montevideo and Buenos Aires, Argentina, overseeing the production of characters and animations for the Disney Emoji Blitz. The game designer will work with the live operations design team and product managers, taking on tasks related to the Disney Emoji Blitz.

In August 2022, Jam City laid off 17% of its staff through a major workforce restructuring. Jam City stated that the restructuring was a “necessary measure to improve financial flexibility and operational efficiency and to maintain long-term growth” and would “resolve the issue of staff redundancy due to the acquisition of Ludia and reorganize the development team.”

While global gaming companies have been conducting massive layoffs since the second half of last year, this early restructuring appears to have been a blessing in disguise.

A representative from Jam City stated, “We aim to level up our talents” and added, “We are looking for innovators who can adapt in a dynamic, collaborative, and rapidly changing environment.”

Meanwhile, Jam City is a leading North American game developer headquartered in Los Angeles, California. In 2015, Netmarble invested approximately $127 million to acquire a 60% stake in Jam City. In September 2022, Jam City expanded its business by acquiring Ludia, a mobile game company based in Canada.
