Elon Musk’s Secret Trip to Beijing: A Game Changer for Tesla?

Daniel Kim Views

CEO Elon Musk has secretly headed to Beijing.

According to Reuters, on the 28th, Elon Musk plans to meet with high-ranking officials in Beijing, China, to discuss the Full Self-Driving (FSD) software launch in the country.

He also aims to gain approval to transfer data collected in China to train algorithms necessary for Tesla’s autonomous driving technology overseas.

Four years ago, Tesla launched the FSD, the most autonomous version of its autopilot software, but it has not yet been available in China.

Since 2021, at the request of Chinese regulators, Tesla has stored all data collected in Shanghai in China, and has not transferred it back to the United States.

On the other hand, Chinese competitors like Xiaopeng Motors have been striving to gain an advantageous position over Tesla by launching similar software.

Musk responded to a Chinese customer’s social media question earlier this month: “We can provide FSD soon.”

Musk’s visit to China was not publicly announced, and Tesla did not respond to requests for confirmation.

So far, Tesla has sold over 1.7 million vehicles in China, and the Shanghai factory is its largest production base.
