For the first time in history, Hyundai Motor has achieved record-breaking eco-friendly vehicle sales in the U.S., surpassing 10,000 units in monthly hybrid (HEV) sales. Kia also broke records by selling over 5,000 units of its electric vehicle (EV) models for the first time.

According to the industry on the 2nd, Hyundai’s hybrid sales in the U.S. last month totaled 10,096 units, led by the Tucson HEV with 4,588 units, followed by the Santa Fe HEV with 2,087 units, the Sonata HEV with 1,755 units, and the Avante HEV with 1,666 units. The electric vehicles Ioniq5 and Ioniq6 sold 59.4% and 40.8% more units than a year ago, totaling 3,702 and 1,253 units, respectively. The total sales of eco-friendly vehicles (HEV, EV, FCEV) were 16,274 units.

While Hyundai saw a strong performance in hybrid sales, Kia saw a boom in electric vehicle sales. Kia’s EV model sales reached 5,045 units, surpassing 5,000 units in a month for the first time. The EV6 sold 2,051 units, a 65.3% increase from the previous year, while the EV9 achieved its highest monthly sales since its launch with 1,572 units.

Hyundai-Kia’s combined eco-friendly model sales totaled 26,889 units. The proportion of eco-friendly vehicle sales was 19.3%, on the verge of surpassing 20%. This marked the second-highest proportion of eco-friendly vehicle sales, following last August’s record of 19.4%.

Meanwhile, the total U.S. sales of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis were 139,865 units, a 3.5% decrease from a year ago. Hyundai Motor Group explained, “This slight decrease is due to a reverse base effect from last year’s strong performance and a temporary drop in sales ahead of major RV (Recreational Vehicle) model changes.”

Hyundai Motor plans to launch Tucson and Santa Cruz product enhancement models. As the new car effect of the product enhancement model of Santa Fe from Hyundai and Sorento from Kia begins to take hold, sales are expected to increase.
