Apple Revolutionizes AI With New In-House Chips for Data Centers

Daniel Kim Views

Apple is developing its own AI chip for use in its data centers.

The Wall Street Journal reported on the 7th (local time) that Apple is developing a proprietary chip that can run AI software in data centers.

The project, internally named the Apple Chips in Data Center (ACDC), has been underway for several years to utilize Apple’s chip design expertise in server infrastructure. According to officials, it is unclear when the new chips will be unveiled.

Amid growing pressure from Apple’s delayed launch of its AI service, CEO Tim Cook they hinted last week that Apple plans to reveal several technology-powered features in the coming months.

In an interview with Reuters, Cook said, “We are very optimistic about the opportunities for generative AI and are making substantial investments.”

Furthermore, Apple plans to hold a virtual event to introduce a new iPad model, some of which are expected to be equipped with new chips to accelerate AI tasks performed on devices.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple’s server chips will likely focus on inference rather than training AI models dominated by NVIDIA.

Meanwhile, Apple has collaborated closely with a Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturing company to design and start producing these chips. Whether both companies have achieved their final results remains uncertain.

Apple shares were up 1% before the market closed.
