Brazilian Phone Users to Get First Dibs on Google’s AI Anti-Theft Feature

Daniel Kim Views

On the 11th, Google announced that Brazil will be the first country to test the anti-theft feature for Android phones.

This feature uses AI to identify when a mobile phone has been stolen and locks the device’s screen.

Three types of locks will be provided during the initial testing phase. One uses Google-created AI to detect signals of common movements related to theft, triggering the screen lock.

The second feature enables users to enter their phone number on another device and complete a security challenge to lock the device’s screen remotely. The final mode locks the screen automatically if the device remains disconnected from the internet for a long time.

Google announced that starting in July, this feature will be available to users of Android phones version 10 in Brazil and will gradually roll out to users in other countries.

Recently, phone theft problems have been increasing in Brazil. According to the Brazilian Public Security Yearbook data for 2023, the number of mobile phones stolen in Brazil in 2022 increased by 16.6% compared to the previous year, reaching nearly a million units.

In December last year, the Brazilian government launched the Cellula Seguro app. This app allows users to report theft and remotely block access to a device using another trusted person’s device.
