Is Your Self-Driving Car Safe? Biden Cracks Down on Chinese Tech

Daniel Kim Views

President Joe Biden has announced a ban on Chinese software in self-driving vehicles. This move follows the imposition of high tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and further escalates efforts to curb Chinese technology influence.

According to Reuters, the Biden administration is set to ban the use of Chinese software in autonomous vehicles classified as Level 3 or higher. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) defines Level 3 autonomy as requiring some driver intervention but allowing for autonomous operation in most typical driving scenarios.

The U.S. government intends to restrict the wireless communication modules developed by China for electric cars. Once this regulation takes effect, China’s influence in the U.S. self-driving vehicle market will be limited. An insider stated, “Automakers and suppliers must verify whether the software comes from a ‘foreign entity of concern’ like China.”

On the 31st of last month, the U.S. Department of Commerce held a meeting to address security risks related to such software. They announced that they would announce related policies in August. Representatives from nine countries, including South Korea, Japan, Australia, Canada, and the European Union (EU), participated in the conference to share views on data and cybersecurity risks.

The U.S. government is concerned that China could use driver monitoring systems installed in vehicles to monitor and record passengers’ conversations. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo stated in May that the security risks associated with autonomous vehicles are very high and serious, necessitating an immediate response.
