Toyota Camry, a well-regarded mid-size hybrid sedan, has been recognized in the U.S. for its design, performance, and technological advancements. On Sunday, Green Car Journal announced the winners of its 2025 Green Car Awards, with the Toyota Camry taking home the highest honor of Green Car of the Year.

The Green Car Awards, now in its 20th year, is a global automotive awards ceremony. It evaluates eco-friendly vehicle models based on fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness, selecting the top models in various categories.

This year’s awards featured six categories. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) dominated four categories, while an LPG hybrid model and a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) won the other categories.

The highest honor, Green Car of the Year, went to the Toyota Camry, a 9th-generation mid-size hybrid sedan. The model received praise for its sleek design, efficiency, and advanced technology. The Dodge Charger Daytona, the brand’s first electric vehicle, was awarded the Performance Green Car of the Year, while the Volvo EX90 was chosen as the Luxury Green Car of the Year.

Other winners included the Chevrolet Equinox EV for Green SUV of the Year, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV for Family Green Car of the Year, and the Chevrolet BrightDrop for Commercial Green Car of the Year. The Green Car Journal also plans to announce the winners of Green Truck of the Year and Urban Green Car of the Year.

The Toyota 9th-generation Camry, awarded Green Car of the Year, will be released as a hybrid-only model in the South Korean market by the end of 2024. The vehicle pairs a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with Toyota’s 5th-generation Hybrid System (THS 5). The front-wheel drive (FWD) model, equipped with two electric motors, generates 225 horsepower, while the electronic on-demand all-wheel drive (AWD) model produces 235 horsepower. Its fuel efficiency in the U.S. is approximately 20 kilometers per liter.

Notably, the model is based on the TNGA-K platform, reflecting Toyota’s latest design philosophy, which focuses on performance improvement and enhanced market competitiveness. It also includes upgraded digital equipment to improve user experience (UX). The interior features a horizontally designed layout, with a 12.3-inch touch display that supports over-the-air (OTA) updates and connected voice recognition. Additional features include a 10-inch head-up display (HUD) and a digital key.
