Tesla plans to expand its full-time workforce at its Gigafactory in Germany by converting 500 temporary workers into permanent employees starting November 1. The move follows a thorough review by factory management but did not involve discussions with the German union IG Metall, which has previously criticized working conditions at the Grünheide facility.
Tesla expressed optimism about the future of electric vehicle production, stating, “At a time when many companies are talking about job cuts and plant closures, the news that a further 500 people will be offered a long-term perspective at Tesla in a permanent position is particularly pleasing,” Tesla said.
Grünheide, Tesla’s only Gigafactory in Europe, currently employs around 12,000 workers.
In a recent employee meeting, Michaela Schmitz, the chair of the labor council, called management to reduce the number of temporary workers and increase full-time hires. However, Tesla did not disclose the number of temporary workers employed at the plant.
Earlier this year, Tesla reduced its workforce as part of a voluntary restructuring and cost-cutting effort, choosing not to renew contracts for some subcontracted workers.
