China’s Steel Industry Faces Tough Times: Demand Expected to Drop 1.5% in 2025

theguru Views

A Chinese state-backed research institute predicts that China’s steel demand will decline by 1.5% next year compared to this year.

On Friday, the Metallurgical Industry Planning and Research Institute (MPI) announced that China’s steel consumption in 2025 will reach 855 million tons, marking a 1.5% decrease from this year’s projected total.

For 2024, steel consumption is estimated at 863 million tons, reflecting a 4.4% drop compared to 2023.

China, the world’s largest steel producer, is experiencing declining demand. This is driven by a sluggish real estate market and slowing growth in the manufacturing sector.

Crude steel production is also on a downward trajectory. From January to November this year, China’s crude steel output totaled 929.19 million tons, a 2.7% drop compared to the 952.14 million tons produced during the same period last year.
