In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the iconic Toyota AE86, the company unveiled a special edition of the GR86 at the FUJI 86/BRZ STYLE 2024 event at Fuji Speedway in July this year. Known as the RZ 40th Anniversary Limited or the 40th Limited, this model pays homage to the beloved AE86, combining classic design elements with modern technology. Only 200 units of this limited-edition model were made available in Japan through a reservation system at GR Garage between September 25 and October 9, 2023, making it a rare collector’s item.

A Design That Pays Tribute to the AE86

The 40th Limited’s biggest attraction is its exterior design, which is reminiscent of the AE86. It is available in two body colors: Crystal White Pearl and Spark Red. Adding the 40th Anniversary Side Decal, available as a dealer option, allows you to recreate the AE86’s unique High-Tech Two-Tone and High-Flash Two-Tone styles.

In addition, the door handle area is painted in crystal black silica, unlike the existing body color, further emphasizing the AE86’s exterior features. These details are a nod to fans of the AE86, drawing direct comparisons with the original model’s legendary status.

Interior Details Reflecting AE86 Heritage

Inside, the 40th Limited features commemorative touches that highlight its legacy. The driver and passenger door trims are embroidered with “SINCE 1983 40TH,” while the GR floor mats are also available as a dealer option, making it clear that this model is a tribute to Toyota’s history. These thoughtful details enhance the connection between the GR86 and its predecessor, the AE86, making it a true collector’s edition.

The 40th Limited has a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission priced at 3,822,000 yen (about $25,300) and 3,920,000 yen (about $25,949), respectively. The pricing is higher by approximately 346,000 yen compared to the base GR86, reflecting its special edition features and rarity.

North American Attention: TRUENO Edition Pays Homage to the AE86

In North America, the AE86 legacy is also being honored with the TRUENO Edition of the GR86, a limited-edition model of 860 units. This edition features a black-finished bonnet, rear spoiler, and specially designed interior. Toyota’s move underscores its commitment to preserving the AE86’s iconic status in Japan and markets like North America.
