Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance division, AMG, is developing its first-ever independent model. Following the SLS AMG and AMG GT series, the new independent model will be a pure electric vehicle with a high-performance coupe SUV. Since the teaser image was unveiled, netizens have continuously shown interest.

This new vehicle’s cutting-edge powertrain, installed for the first time in Mercedes-Benz history, predicts the most powerful performance ever. Its performance rivals that of supercars, with a total output of four digits. Recently, the virtual rendering of the new AMG vehicle was released and is attracting attention. Various reactions are pouring into the appearance of Mercedes-Benz’s new family look.

The large SUV proportions stand out, and the expected model name is GLR

Avarvarii, a studio specializing in automobile design, posted a rendering of Mercedes AMG’s coupe-type electric SUV on November 30. Since the prototype has not been captured yet, this rendering is close to imagination. The new vehicle, which has the virtual model name GLR, stands out with proportions comparable to those of a large SUV, unlike the somewhat compact feel of the teaser image.

The roof line and DLO line, which are close to the standard of a coupe SUV, add a sense of speed, and the high beltline makes the body look low. Unlike the general wheels of electric vehicles, which prioritize aerodynamics, the thin-spoken design is also unique. On the side, the auto flush-type door handle of the latest Mercedes-Benz vehicle completes the sleek body line.

The new three-pointed star family look has already sparked mixed reactions

Overall, it looks stylish, but opinions are divided on the front design. This is because the three-pointed star lamps that Benz has been pushing recently have been applied. The three-pointed star-shaped daytime running lights (DRL) were first introduced through the Vision AMG concept. They are located at the corners where the front fender, bonnet, and bumper meet and connect each element visually.

However, there is a consensus that the latest Benz vehicles damage their luxurious image by overusing the triangular star design. The front grille of the E-Class also features triangular star patterns, and the new GLE and S-Class facelifts, which will be launched in the future, will have triangular star details on the front and rear lamps. Regarding the new GLR family look, the evaluation is expected to be significantly divided depending on how naturally the surrounding elements are arranged.

It will feature the most potent powertrain ever, exceeding a combined total output of 1,000 horsepower

The GLR is being developed based on the AMG high-performance electric vehicle dedicated platform AMG.EA. It is equipped with the most powerful powertrain in the history of Benz electric vehicles. YASA’s axial flux motor is the core, and it is smaller and lighter than existing electric vehicle motors. Each motor is expected to produce a maximum output of 480 horsepower, and it is known that it will support a quad motor configuration to exceed 1,000 horsepower of the total production. This will be paired with a battery pack with 40% improved density.

The launch is expected to occur as early as 2026 or, at the latest, early 2027. As Mercedes-AMG’s flagship electric SUV, it will likely compete with high-performance electric SUVs such as the Porsche Cayenne Electric and the Lotus Elettra. The new car’s starting price is likely to be over $110,000.
