Faced with declining sales and stiff competition, Stellantis is banking on innovation to regain its momentum. The automaker has revealed its STLA Frame Platform, a versatile foundation for next-generation electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles that power full-size pickup trucks and SUVs. The platform also supports hybrids, internal combustion engines (ICE), and even hydrogen fuel cell powertrains, making it a crucial part of Stellantis’ multi-powertrain strategy.

In the highly competitive automotive landscape, platforms like the STLA Frame are pivotal for reducing costs and streamlining production. By accommodating multiple models across its 14-brand portfolio, Stellantis aims to maximize efficiency while delivering cutting-edge performance.

Up to 684 miles of range
Excellent towing and load capacity

The next-generation STLA frame platform will be applied to the entire lineup of large SUVs and pickups, starting with the electric pickup truck RAM 1500 REV and the plug-in hybrid model 1500 RAM Charger, both of which are Ram brands. It uses an 800V architecture that supports bidirectional charging and can drive 100 miles (about 161 km) on a 10-minute charge for the pure electric version. It also uses a 400V architecture to add 50 miles (about 80 km) in 10 minutes when configured with a range extender.

For the STLA frame, trucks like the Ram 1500 Ramcharger can achieve up to 690 miles (1,110 kilometers) of range with a gas-powered range extender, while the Ram 1500 REV can achieve up to 500 miles (800 kilometers) of range on battery power alone. Electric and hybrid powertrains can support up to 14,000 pounds (6,350 kilograms) of towing and 2,700 pounds (1,225 kilograms) of payload, and the truck can navigate water up to 24 inches (61 cm) deep.

Innovative Design and Multi-Powertrain Support

Built from high-strength steel, the STLA Frame minimizes weight while ensuring durability and safety. Reinforced frame rails protect the battery from side impacts, enhancing the platform’s resilience. This flexible design allows Stellantis to support various powertrains, from pure electric to hybrids and hydrogen fuel cells, providing adaptability in a rapidly evolving market.

Stellantis has also committed to rolling out three additional platforms—STLA Large, Medium, and Small—to address the needs of various vehicle categories. The STLA Small platform, aimed at compact vehicles, is expected to be announced in late 2025 or early 2026.

Upcoming Models: Ram and Jeep Drive Forward

The first vehicle based on the STLA Frame platform, the Ram 1500, will launch in early 2025, with REV (pure electric) and EREV (range-extended hybrid) variants. Stellantis claims the Ram 1500 will set new benchmarks in range, towing capacity, and payload, directly competing with other electric pickups like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T.

Beyond the Ram 1500, Stellantis plans to apply the STLA Frame to additional models, including the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Meanwhile, Jeep’s EV lineup continues to grow, with the Wagoneer S, based on the STLA Large platform, launching in the U.S. this fall at a starting price of $71,995. The Jeep Recon, another electric model, is set to debut in late December 2024, with EV versions of the Gladiator and Grand Cherokee expected soon after.
