According to InsideEVs, Tesla announced Monday that it plans to update its Model S and Model X for 2025.

According to the report, Lars Moravy, Tesla’s Vice President of Engineering, recently revealed in a podcast interview that the Model S and Model X will receive updates by the end of 2025. He added that some features from the Model 3 and Model Y will be incorporated into these models, drawing industry attention.

When asked about the upcoming upgrades for the Model S and Model X, Moravy responded, “Just give it a minute. We’ll get there. The upgrade a couple of years ago was bigger than most people thought in terms of architecture, and the car’s structure got a lot better, too. But we’ll give it some love later this year and make sure it gets a little bit…you know, with the stuff we’ve been putting in 3 and Y., with 3 and Y, the higher volume stuff, you’ve gotta focus there.”

While Moravy didn’t disclose a detailed list of new features, some industry watchers speculate that the Model S and X might receive a complete redesign or a significant facelift. Industry insiders believe that Tesla may update the exterior design to create more visual consistency across its lineup.

Since Moravy’s comments were cautious, some analysts predict that the update will focus on minor feature additions rather than a full-scale redesign. Previously, Tesla introduced small changes to the Model 3 and Model Y, such as ambient lighting, a front bumper camera, new interior materials, and chassis adjustments.

Tesla’s Model S and Model X sales performance in 2024 was lackluster. The combined deliveries of Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck totaled 85,133 units, accounting for less than 5% of Tesla’s total vehicle deliveries. In 2023, that number was even lower, at less than 4%, with only 68,874 units sold. Despite these disappointing figures, Tesla has stated that it has no plans to discontinue the Model S and Model X.

Industry analysts question whether updating its aging models will be enough to attract new buyers. They note that Tesla is facing growing challenges due to CEO Elon Musk’s political actions, which have drawn public scrutiny, and intensifying competition in the premium EV market from Audi, Porsche, BMW, and other automakers. As competition in the luxury electric vehicle segment heats up, Tesla must strategically position the Model S and Model X to maintain its market appeal.
