Japan’s Deep Fear of North Korea – What They’re Really Searching For: Part 2

Daniel Kim Views

◇ Keyword 2: Public Execution

The second notable keyword is “public execution.” Japan also carries out executions. However, Article 477(2) of the Japanese Code of Criminal Procedure stipulates that no one can enter the execution ground unless they have been granted permission by a prosecutor or the head of the penal facility. In practice, entry by third parties, except for religious figures requested by the condemned prisoner, is denied. The public executions carried out in North Korea are conducted under procedures that violate human rights, unlike these general executions. Therefore, They are criticized by Japan, South Korea, and the UN Commission on Human Rights.

◇ Keyword 3: Travel

The last keyword is “travel.” As you may know, people of South Korean nationality are not allowed to travel to North Korea. On the other hand, it is said that Japanese people can tour North Korea. North Korea is one of the most closed countries in the world, which stimulates a sense of adventure for some. Therefore, when searching for “North Korean travel” on a Japanese portal site, many posts ask how to go on a trip to North Korea or what to do when visiting.

The blog in the above photo explains quite in detail how to travel to North Korea based on the blogger’s experience visiting the country. It includes the cost of traveling to North Korea, how to apply for a tour, and precautions when entering the country. However, North Korea does not allow foreigners to travel freely, so tours are only available through travel agencies.

We’ve looked at the keywords related to North Korea on Japan’s leading portal site. We found that Japanese people are interested in North Korea as much as they want to know how to travel to it. They are also concerned about the threat from North Korea and have systems in place to deal with it. Also, there is a lot of interest in human rights issues in North Korea; it would be good if efforts to resolve these issues could be made together with South Korea.
