After a gym in Incheon, South Korea sparked controversy by posting a notice prohibiting middle-aged women from entering, a hotel fitness center in Daegu is causing a stir online by restricting access to people in their 70s.

A local hotel industry reported on June 18 that a notice was posted at the entrance of a four-star hotel fitness center in Suseong-gu, Daegu. It stated, “Customers aged 76 and over are not allowed to register as members or use the facilities for the day.”

It also stated, “Current members aged 76 and over must submit a family consent form stating that they will take responsibility in case of an accident. The company will review and make a decision. If the confirmation and family consent forms are not submitted, they will be refunded and expelled.”

It continued, “We will take the same measures for those under the age of 76 with chronic illnesses or mobility issues.”

The center explained their notice, sharing, “There are limitations to meeting all the diverse demands of our members, and there are safety concerns. We decided to change the center’s operating policy due to frequent disputes arising from safety accidents, such as falls or slips inside the facility. It was an inevitable choice.”

Viewers online are split in the heated debate of the Daegu Fitness Center’s policy of limiting senior citizen access.

Those who supported the policy said, “It’s not discrimination against the elderly; it seems more like protecting them.” They also said, “It seems reasonable, as people over 70 would need a guardian to use gym equipment safely.”

People against the policy said things like, “Everyone ages” and “There are elderly people who receive personal training at the gym.” “Whatever goes around, eventually comes around.”

A gym in Incheon made headlines for posting a notice that said, “No aunties allowed. Only cultured and elegant women are allowed to enter,” sparking a discrimination controversy.

After putting up a sign that read “No aunties allowed,” a gym in Incheon made headlines. The sign sparked discussion on discrimination after it additionally stated, “Entry is restricted to refined and sophisticated women only.”
