Howard X, an Australian of Chinese descent famous for his striking resemblance to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, was detained by French police after filming a video with a man impersonating former U.S. President Donald Trump at the 2024 Paris Olympics soccer venue.

On Saturday, Howard Lee, also known as Howard X, shared a video on his Instagram showing him dressed up as Kim Jong Un. In the post, he explained that French authorities detained him and the Trump impersonator following the video’s release despite not breaking any laws.

The incident took place on Friday during the men’s soccer final between France and Spain at the Stade de France. Howard X, dressed to mimic Kim Jong Un with his distinctive hairstyle, glasses, and a black suit, was at the game alongside a Trump impersonator. Lee reported that French police approached them, checked their passports, escorted them out of the venue, and ultimately detained them. Despite this, Lee maintained that they had not committed any illegal acts.

The reason Lee faced sanctions likely stems from regulations prohibiting “political expression” in spectator areas, including Olympic venues.

Lee also attended the boxing semifinal, where North Korea’s Pang Chol Mi competed against China’s Chang Yuan. For this event, he donned Kim Jong Un’s signature attire, holding a Winnie the Pooh doll in one hand and a North Korean flag in the other. Despite his enthusiastic support for the North Korean team, including Pang Chol Mi, the North Korean athletes ignored him.

He became viral after appearing at various international events disguised as Kim Jong Un. Previously, he was arrested and questioned by police for impersonating Kim Jong Un ahead of the first North Korea-U.S. summit held in Singapore in 2018.
