Shein and Temu Under the Microscope: CPSC Urges Safety Assessment

Daniel Kim Views

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has called for evaluating the Chinese online shopping platforms Shein and Temu.

On Wednesday, The Verge reported that CPSC commissioners Peter Feldman and Douglas Stebbins argued that safety agencies must assess how Shein and Temu comply with consumer product safety laws.

They expressed specific concerns regarding the dangers of children’s products, as there are no clear standards.

The CPSC plans to assess whether Shein and Temu operate outside its jurisdiction and investigate the Chinese manufacturers behind these platforms. The commissioners pointed out the increasing presence of both domestic and international third-party sellers on online marketplaces. While these platforms offer various benefits, the CPSC stressed the need for consistent safety expectations.

Government authorities are also taking a closer look at online retailers like Shein and Temu, which gained popularity due to their low prices. The European Union (EU) enforces strict regulations on large online platforms, while the U.S. investigates product quality.
