Online media outlet Gigazine reported that a significant number of Generation Z (Gen Z), born in the late 1990s and early 2000s, prefer gaming over watching movies.

According to the 2024 survey conducted by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) in the U.S., gaming is one of the most beloved forms of entertainment iAround 190 million people, ranging from 5 to 90 years old, play games.

In 2004, only 17% of gamers were over 50, but by 2024, this figure increased to 29%. The average age of gamers also rose from 29 to 36. The demographic breakdown of gamers shows that 53% are male, 46% are female, and 1% identify as non-heterosexual.

When asked why they play games, 68% cited “to pass the time and relax,” 67% said “for enjoyment,” and 37% indicated “to think or clear their minds.” The platforms used for gaming include mobile phones at 67%, PCs at 53%, gaming consoles at 36%, and virtual reality (VR) at 12%.

As the gaming industry continues to grow, 63% of players reported that gaming offers the best value for their money. Following gaming, 46% of respondents chose video streaming services, 44% selected music listening, 31% preferred movie watching, and 30% chose reading books and magazines. Notably, among Gen Z, 63% stated that they prefer gaming over movies.

Stanley Pierre-Louis, CEO of the ESA, stated that the Alpha generation, born after the 2010s, is expected to become the largest generation of players ever. As they grow into roles such as game developers, engineers, artists, and storytellers, the incredible potential of games will continue to shape and transform our lives.
