$38 Ticket for a Fake Whale Shark? Chinese Aquarium-Goers Wanting Their Money Back

Daniel Kim Views

Something doesn’t seem right with this whale shark in this aquarium. Swimming among other marine creatures, the whale shark’s body appears fragmented like a toy. Turns out, this whale shark was an aquatic robot. Why did the aquarium choose to display a robot?

This aquarium in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China, reopened earlier this month after five years of renovations.

The aquarium attracted massive crowds to promote a whale shark on display. Still, due to the ban on trading endangered species, they opted to showcase a robotic version of the shark instead.

Visitors demanded refunds for their tickets, which cost approximately $38, after witnessing the robotic shark, leaving children and families disappointed.
