Trump’s Change of Heart on TikTok: Will He Undo Biden’s Ban?

With Donald Trump winning the 2024 U.S. presidential election, attention is focused on whether the TikTok ban, initiated by President Biden, will be overturned.

According to online media outlet GigaZine on Monday, Trump had previously ordered the sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations during his first term. However, as he campaigned for re-election, he showed a supportive stance toward TikTok.

The outlet noted that Trump might urge Congress to repeal the TikTok ban, order the Justice Department to cease enforcement, or propose an alternative compromise to selling TikTok’s U.S. business. However, these actions are likely to face significant obstacles.

An interesting figure in this context is Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, who played a significant role in Trump’s campaign. Musk expressed a negative view on banning TikTok, stating, “In my opinion, TikTok should not be banned in the USA, even though such a ban may benefit the X platform,” indicating his opposition to TikTok’s expulsion from the U.S.

Some analysts interpret Trump’s evolving attitude towards TikTok as indicative of a broader shift in U.S.-China relations.

According to Bloomberg, Trump’s second administration might ignore or repeal cybersecurity regulations established by the Biden administration, especially those aimed at countering cyberattacks from adversarial nations like China and Russia.
