A tense standoff unfolds as a bomb-laden drone hovers above a wounded soldier lying prone on the ground. The unmanned aircraft, capable of unleashing its deadly payload at any moment, looms over the immobilized combatant and has no means of escape.

Aware of his dire situation, the soldier locks eyes with the drone’s camera and gestures as if lighting a cigarette. The drone operators, recognizing this final request, hold their fire. The soldier, sensing his impending demise, fumbles to ignite his last smoke. After finally managing to light up, he gazes defiantly at the drone. Moments later, two bombs are released, ending his life.

This haunting footage, captured on December 5 by Ukraine’s 54th Mechanized Brigade’s K-2 Battalion, documents a Russian soldier’s final moments. Reflecting on the grim footage, the battalion remarked that while cigarette packs warn that “smoking kills,” for him, death arrived with shocking swiftness.
