Hyundai Ioniq 9 vs Kia EV9: The Battle Over Battery Size and Value for Money

Kia recently signed contracts for its 2025 EV9 models, including the more affordable “Standard Model” and the high-performance EV9 GT electric SUV. However, consumer reactions have been less than enthusiastic, with many expressing dissatisfaction over the high cost relative to the performance and the smaller battery capacity compared to its rival, the Hyundai Ioniq 9.

The Battery Controversy: EV9 vs. Ioniq 9

The most significant point of contention is the battery capacity, particularly with the EV9 Standard model. The Hyundai Ioniq 9 boasts a larger 110.3 kWh battery, offering a driving range of 501–532 km, while the EV9 Standard is equipped with a 76.1 kWh battery, resulting in a range of 374–501 km. This disparity has led to differing customer opinions, with some lamenting the reduced battery capacity, especially since the EV9 is not a compact SUV. In contrast, others argue that if the price difference is significant, the Ioniq 9 offers better value.

In response, Kia has introduced the EV9 Standard model to make the vehicle more competitively priced and adjusted the price of the long-range model. However, critics claim that this is not an actual price cut but rather a decline in product quality.

EV9 GT: High Performance, High Price

For those seeking superior performance, the EV9 GT offers an exciting option. The EV9 GT accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds, with a maximum output of 374 kW (509 horsepower) and 740 Nm (75.5 kgf·m) of torque. It has a range of up to 408 kilometers on a single charge, thanks to its 99.8 kWh 4th-generation high-voltage battery. The GT model also has advanced technologies, including an electronically controlled suspension, an electronic limited-slip differential (e-LSD), and a performance timer feature for real-time driving data tracking.

Pricing Concerns: EV9 GT vs. Hyundai Ioniq 9

Despite the EV9 GT’s impressive performance, Kia’s major obstacle is its price. Hyundai’s Ioniq 9 is priced aggressively at 67.15 million won (around $46,000) after tax benefits, while the EV9 GT is priced at 88.49 million won (about $61,000), making it significantly more expensive than its rival. Some customers who purchased the EV9 at the regular price when it was first released have voiced their frustrations, calling it a “price cut to lower product quality.”

As Kia develops the EV9 and EV9 GT, it must address customer concerns about pricing and performance to remain competitive in the electric SUV market. How Kia handles this backlash, particularly regarding battery capacity and pricing strategy, will be key to its success.
