KPOP Group Stray Kids Met With Racial Remarks at the Met Gala

Stray Kids, who attend the American Met Gala event representing South Korea, has sparked controversy over racial discrimination by local journalists.

On the 6th, the K-pop group Stray Kids attended the Met Gala fashion event held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as global ambassadors for the fashion brand Tommy Hilfiger.

In the released footage, Stray Kids appeared on the red carpet in suits. However, some disrespectful comments by a few photographers towards the members have sparked controversy among Korean netizens.

According to a Newsis report, some photographers made rude comments and requests towards the members, such as “They look like robots,” “I’ve never seen such emotionless expressions,” and “Everyone, try jumping.” They also mocked the Korean singers by saying “Arigato” (Thank you in Japanese) and bursting into mocking laughter.

Upon hearing the news, fans expressed their anger on various social media platforms and communities, saying, “This is absolutely nothing to laugh at. They were not racially discriminated against because of their height, but simply because they’re Asian men,” and “If you watch the video, it’s not because they’re short, but they’re treated like clowns being told to dance and perform.”

Meanwhile, the Met Gala has been hosted annually since 1948 by American Vogue and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. At each event, globally renowned pop singers, models, athletes, and actors add glamour to the event. Korean artists attending this year’s 2024 Met Gala include Stray Kids and Jennie from BLACKPINK.

There are laws in this country against racist hate. The US gov't ought to investigate their behavior which at the least was rude and at the most illegal.
