The Hollywood blockbuster film Planet of the Apes, one of representative special effects (VFX), has returned after seven years. Director Wes Ball of the new film Planet of the Apes: A New Era said in a video press conference, “I wanted to open a completely new chapter of this franchise, not just make a fourth part of the series.”

The most notable part of the film is the exceptional level of computer graphics (CG). A whopping 35 minutes of the 145-minute runtime are full CG scenes. The capabilities of studio Weta, which is the world’s top VFX studio that has been involved in the director’s previous work, Maze Runner, shine in this film. Director Ball boasted, “Audiences will be able to see the world’s best effects in this film as well.”

The film takes place 300 years after the Planet of the Apes trilogy, which was rebooted in 2011. The film begins with the funeral of the previous protagonist Caesar and depicts a new era with new protagonists. It tells the story of ape Noah and human Nova in a world where humans have degenerated and apes dominate, as well as their powerful enemy Proximus. The message of the series about coexistence, peace, and order remains the same in this work. The same goes for revealing human desires and selfishness through the apes. The philosophy of breaking away from anthropocentric thinking continues as well. Director Ball emphasized that “It is a film that incorporates all the good points of the original and the trilogy of the franchise,” adding, “It is a film with a universal story and emotional cinematic experience that transcends culture and borders.”

This work is also a new beginning for the trilogy starring Noah. Director Ball said, “I wanted to emphasize the adventure and highlight the aspect of a new beginning.” The characters opening a new era are also uniquely implemented. Regarding the human girl Nova, Director Ball described her as a “puzzle-like character” and said, “The secret will be revealed when the big door opens from the world of apes to the world of humans.” Regarding the protagonist Noah, he explained, “He is a character who looks at various perspectives of that knowledge is power.” As for the villain of this film, Proximus, he explained, “He is a character who studies human history and dreams of evolution and is most similar to humans.”

There are plenty of scenes that will delight fans of the original series that started in 1968. Director Ball was deeply impressed by the original in his childhood and said, “We reproduced various parts of the original series in this film as well.” It is easy to find scenes that pay homage to the previous works, such as scenes where apes ride horses and capture humans.
