AI Voice Too Real? OpenAI Suspends Service Amid Celebrity Voice Controversy

joynews24 Views

OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, will temporarily stop using ChatGPT’s voice feature. OpenAI made this decision in response to ongoing claims that the voice of ChatGPT sounds similar to that of Scarlett Johansson.

OpenAI stated on its blog, “We have received many questions about how we selected the voice for ChatGPT, especially Sky. We are working to temporarily suspend the use of Sky while we resolve this issue.”

According to Yonhap News, the suspension of Sky, one of ChatGPT’s five voice services, is due to a controversy over imitation that arose after OpenAI unveiled its new artificial intelligence (AI) model, GPT-4o on the 13th.

GPT-4o has attracted attention for its ability to have natural conversations with humans through voice. This has led to comparisons with the 2013 film Her, with some people suggesting that it’s a real-life version of the film.

In particular, there have been claims that the voice of the Sky model sounds very similar to Johansson, who provided the voice for the AI character in the film Her. However, OpenAI has denied allegations that the voice of Sky was intentionally made to mimic Johansson’s voice.

OpenAI stated, “The voice of Sky is not an imitation of Johansson. It’s the voice of another professional actor,” adding, “We cannot disclose any personal information for privacy reasons, including the name of the actor.”

OpenAI explained, “The voices of the five chatbots, including Sky, were selected over five months through a casting and recording process. We received about 400 submissions from voice actors and movie actors, which we then narrowed down to 14. The final five were chosen by our internal team.”
