Lee Byung Hun, the lead actor in Netflix’s highly anticipated Squid Game Season 2, recently opened up about a shocking behind-the-scenes moment where he slapped his own cheek during a tense scene. The revelation came through a Wednesday Highlight Reaction video uploaded to Netflix Korea’s YouTube channel.
In the video, Lee Byung Hun explains that his character slaps himself after failing the spinning top game. I slapped myself pretty hard,” he says. The director wanted to avoid unnecessary retakes, so we filmed it only about three times.”
Lee Byung Hun also shared an interesting detail about the director’s concerns during the scene: “It wasn’t because the director was worried I might be in pain, but more because he was concerned about the possibility of a bruise forming that makeup couldn’t cover up.” This comment offers insight into the production team’s focus on maintaining scene continuity, which sometimes prioritizes the actor’s well-being over the director’s.
Co-star Lee Seo Hwan, also featured in the video, weighed in on Lee Byung Hun’s unexpected skill with the spinning top. “Lee Byung Hun was supposed to fail, but he was just too good!” Lee Seo Hwan recalled. “Even when he threw it casually, it worked. He was doing it so well, it actually became a problem.” This fun anecdote gives a glimpse into the lighter side of the production process.
Lee Byung Hun credited his surprising success with the spinning top to preparation before filming. “Months before the shoot, the production company sent me tops to practice with,” he explained. “I spent a lot of time practicing tying and throwing them quickly, and it paid off.”
Squid Game Season 2 is already creating massive buzz after the global success of the first season. This new season will feature a star-studded cast, including Lee Byung Hun, Lee Jung Jae, Kang Ha Neul, Lee Seo Hwan, and Jo Yu Ri, who are set to compete in a high-stakes, six-way competition.
