Major League Baseball (MLB) players Kim Ha-seong and Choi Ji-man will welcome a new leader as Bob Melvin takes the reins of the San Diego Padres.

MLB.com reported on the 25th (Korean time) that Manager Melvin will be appointed as the new leader of the San Francisco Giants. Both San Francisco and San Diego belong to the National League West Division.

MLB.com added, “Manager Melvin and the San Francisco team have agreed on a contract” and “It will be officially announced soon.” Melvin signed a three-year contract with San Diego in November 2021.

Despite having a contract period remaining with San Diego, he recently sought understanding from the team and met with San Francisco. As a player, he was a catcher for the Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Chicago White Sox.

He also has ties to San Francisco, having played three seasons from 1986 to 1988. After retiring, he started his coaching career as a bench coach for the Milwaukee Brewers. In 2003, he started his managerial career in the MLB with the Seattle Mariners and later took the helm of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Oakland Athletics.

Throughout 20 seasons as a manager, he has recorded 1517 wins and 1425 losses. He also received the ‘Manager of the Year’ award three times during this period. In San Diego, he achieved a record of 171 wins and 153 losses over two seasons.

Manager Melvin participated in the Fall Baseball last season. At that time, San Diego made it to the National League Championship Series (NLCS) but failed to make it to the postseason this season.
