The Marvels’ Flops: Worst Marvel Opening Day Ever in the U.S.!

Hollywood blockbuster Captain Marvel‘s sequel, The Marvels, is expected to record the lowest box office performance in its opening week in the history of Disney Marvel Studios, according to US film specialist media outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline on November 11 (local time).

According to the US box office revenue aggregator, Box Office Mojo, The Marvels earned US$21.5 million in ticket sales in North America on its opening day.

Based on these first-day results, the industry predicts that the film will record a revenue of US$47 million to US$52 million in North America over the three days up to Sunday (12th).

According to US media outlets, this is a lower level than the poor performances of previous films from Marvel Studios.

The worst opening week record for a Marvel film was The Incredible Hulk (2008), which earned US$55.4 million in its first week in North America. However, at that time, Disney had not yet acquired Marvel, so Universal Pictures distributed the film.

Subsequently, Disney Marvel’s Ant-Man, released in 2015, recorded a first-week revenue of US$57.2 million in North America.

Deadline reported that the first week’s overseas revenue forecast for The Marvels has also dropped to US$60 million. As a result, the first week’s global box office revenue is expected to be between US$110 million and US$115 million.

The reactions from critics and audiences are also not as good as previous Marvel works.

In the audience rating survey by market research firm CinemaScore, The Marvels received a B, unlike most of Marvel’s box office hits, which received an A. On the movie rating site Rotten Tomatoes, it has a freshness score of 62% (based on a 100% maximum score).

The Hollywood Reporter evaluated, “The poor performance of ‘The Marvels’ lends credence to the theory that fans are growing weary of the overflowing works and showing a less tolerant attitude towards Marvel movies, and that superhero fatigue is becoming a reality.”

The Marvels, which marked actor Park Seo-joon’s Hollywood debut, attracted the attention of Korean fans. However, there was a disappointing reaction as he only appeared about an hour into the movie and had a screen time of less than five minutes.
