Auction held at New York’s Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries
A rare stamp, known as the Holy Grail among global stamp collectors, has been sold for $2 million at a U.S. auction.
The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 14th (local time) that the American stamp known as the Inverted Jenny among stamp collectors was recently auctioned off for this price, including commission, at the Robert Siegel Auction Gallery in New York.
The Inverted Jenny is a 24-cent airmail stamp issued in the United States in 1918.
It is an ‘error stamp’ printed with the airplane upside down in the center of the stamp due to a production error.
Such error stamps should be discarded during inspection, but a sheet of 100 Inverted Jenny stamps was circulated in the market.
Since then, this stamp has become a target for collectors and has become so famous that it has appeared in the TV animation The Simpsons.
The Inverted Jenny put up for auction is evaluated as the best condition among the 100 stamps circulated in the market.
The new owner of the Inverted Jenny, who won the auction by beating two competitors, was confirmed to be a 76-year-old real estate developer.
He also participated in the Inverted Jenny Auction 2018 but failed to win the bid.
The winning bid for the Inverted Jenny at the 2018 auction was $1.59 million.
